Farewell Marcia Nickerson
Condolensces go out to the family of Marcia Nickerson, 86, of Eastham, who died at home yesterday. Nickerson was a fixture with the Eastham Elementary School Committee, serving as its president for 34 years. She was married to her husband, Art, for 63 years.
She was also quoted in my book, Henry Beston's Cape Cod, recalling the Blizzard of 1978 in Eastham, which claimed The Outermost House. "The water was coming in and it was just so scary," she told me during a visit to the Eastham Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center on Route 6 back in 2002. "It was horrendous; I just couldn't believe my eyes. It was awesome and at the same time frightening -- all I could think of was there was nothing that could stop it."
I last saw Marcia last September following my lecture at Eastham's Chapel in the Pines. She seemed happy and surprised that I remembered her from four years before. This was shortly before she broke her hip last winter, which forced her to stop reading to the children at the elementary school.
According to The Cape Cod Times, visiting hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 29, at the Eastham Methodist Church, with a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 30, in the auditorium at Nauset Regional High School.
